Disappointed. I listened to the audiobook. The narration was very lackluster. The storyline seemed disjointed. I was also hoping for more about the human-animal bond/relationship.
Didn't quite feel this. The world itself was interesting but I just didn't much care about any of the narrative characters. I did make it all the way through, despite that, because the overall story was interesting enough to get me to tough it out.

this is the book that just keeps on giving and giving.
it begins with a haunting description of a dystopian landscape riddled with disease, classism, and poverty, an eerie parallel to our world and almost certainly a prediction our lives years from now. then we get characters with diverse genders, sexualities, and disabilities who are all fully fledged and have their own wants, needs, and motivations that drive the story forward. the entire time I was questioning how the POVs of five different people would eventually converge, and when they did I was blown away. the titular city miller creates doesn't rely heavily on huge chunks of exposition and world-building but seems real nonetheless. the plot is a creeping thing; things build very slowly and then happen all at once, and it is wonderful and exhilarating.

It took a while to get into this book because the language was very unfamiliar and made up. I also couldnβt place it neatly in a category because it doesnβt fit into a specific genre.
