Literally almost no words for this one (I mean that negatively). Well researched, very biased, puts a weird emphasis on fertility as the end all be all of womanhood (ableist much), interesting because it's always important to learn about the data that supports views opposite to yours, still sucked to read. If you're looking for some insight on what gender essentialists are saying to eachother this is a good start.

This book is so dangerous because it pretends to come from a rational viewpoint with supporting “facts”, when in fact the actual science does not line up with the authors point of view.  There is blatant transphobia and misgendering throughout the book and in the end the author interviews parents who were not supportive of their children’s gender to prove her points.  Where are the interviews with the actual “children” involved in her “case studies”?

Is this book transphobic? No. The author acknowledges gender dysphoria is real, and some who suffer from it benefit from transitioning. I challenge anyone who has actually read this book to cite a passage from it that shows hate or fear or disdain for transgendered people.

Criticizing affirmative treatment of gender dysphoria is not transphobic. Critically analyzing data about the incidence rate of gender dysphoria among teenage girls is not transphobic. Questioning how therapists, parents, educators, doctors, etc. care for those who claim gender dysphoria is not transphobic.

Everyone, especially parents and teens, should read this book. The author treats those with gender dysphoria compassionately and counts as friends many of the transgendered people she interviewed.

If you're a teenager questioning your gender identity, I promise you, you're not going to be triggered by this book. It's healthy and empowering to dig into how you're feeling to see what's going on. Don't diagnose yourself based on what you find on social media. No matter what happens, you are loved and valued, and I wish you nothing but peace and success in your life.

This is a must read. It’s so interesting, I love the stats and the amount of interviews and research Abigail did for this book is huge! I’ve only given it 3 stars because it was longer than it needed to be and therefore repetitive in places. The fact that in the 21st century, in the western world, people are still trying to ban books is ridiculous.

That was a really hard book to get through, despite Abigail's skill with a pen. The subject matter was dark, and it only took me so long to get to, because of the difficulty of the subject matter. Despite this, the book is well written, and the various anecdotes throughout help to paint a picture of the statistics they're set to match. Usually, I don't review nonfiction books in the traditional manner of their fictional counterparts, instead writing down what I've learned, ad as such I believe that the main take aways for me are autogynephilia and social contagion. There's also some interesting things about feminism that I might've gotten wrong. Maybe Simone de Beauvoir was correct within her diagnosis, but not her solutions.

In addition to this, the book primarily exists to ask the question of why a mental illness that only affected a vanishingly small portion of primarily men has blown up to fall beneath the domination of teenage girls. The answer is social contagion through social media, a corrupted psychological assocation, a socially ingrained hatred of aspects of feminity, and gender ideaology

Irreversible Damage gets four stars, and I'm glad that it was written and that I was able to make it through the ordeal.

don't read this book! drivel that's been said before a thousand times, unoriginal, uninformed, and boring !

J'aurais voulu pouvoir mettre aucune étoile.
