The murder mystery part of the book was good, and kept me guessing/intrigued. The reason I didn't give it more stars is that I found the narrator to be really unlikeable. Among other things, he would throw out these casually misogynistic statements and it would be like, um what? Extra weird/distressing coming from a woman author.

Really good and thought provoking. Examples of different kinds of mental illness including how circumstances can cause it. Good plot. Keeps you guessing til the end. And leaves you with questions about the characters and about life.

and she does it again. tana french, i love you.
this book was definitely darker than the others in the series. it’s not just because it was about a triple homicide where young children were two of the three victims. that in itself is hard to think about, but there were so many layers to it that i was just sitting here staring at the cover afterwards thinking.
this was so intense with just enough random stuff thrown in to distract me from the actual culprit, jenny. i really thought it was pat the whole time, and then conor came into the picture, and then richie was going hard at bat against pat and i really believed him. i loved richie until the end when he had stolen the evidence that would’ve proven jenny guilty. that made me so disappointed because even though scorcher was like insufferable with his whole lecturing subordinates thing he was right. UGH RICHIE WHY !!!
and then end just kinda made me sad. like, every single person in the book was worse off in the end than they had been in the beginning. richie was back to uniform, jenny was arrested, conor was probs so upset that he couldn’t protect her, the fam was dead, fiona had to turn in her sister, dina was still suffering so badly from a mental health crisis, and scorcher gave up his integrity for the case which was the thing that was most important to him. pain. literally pain all around.
this one was so good. so far my current ranking for this series is:
1. the likeness
2. in the woods
2. broken harbor
4. faithful place
this one just got me good. it might be beating out in the woods for the number 2 spot, but right now it’s a tie. lowkey leaning towards this one though. we shall see.
can’t wait for the next one!!

Tana French is out-fucking-standing.
At this point, I will buy each new Tana French mystery without knowing anything about it or reading any reviews - she earned that status with me with In the Woods (great, but with an unsatisfying conclusion), and The Likeness (still my favorite of her books). I was not that crazy about Faithful Place so I was relieved that Broken Harbour felt like a return-to-form: interesting characters and an absolutely riveting and disturbing mystery. Once I got into this, I got cranky whenever I had to put it down. Now I'm sorry I tore through it so fast because I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait for another one.
