i usually love roald dahl but this one really let me down. it was quite creepy the way mr hoppy did all that to get closer to a woman he didn't even know simply because he was "in love"

This is my all time favourite childhood book. I love the quirky story and the style Dahl writes in. The plot of the story is so unique and fun, I still love it at the age i am now.
I love how Dahl fit so much interesting ideas into just above 50 pages, Thats why it makes such a good read and i am willing to read it over and over again due to the fact i still find it entertaining.
I think this is my favourite book from him by far.

I understand now why this book has a few mixed feeling reviews.

Mr. Hoppy decieves Mrs. Silver by making her believe that he knows a magic spell that will make her tortoise grow (later on the book, get smaller).

Even though the story seemed silly, I can see why people can find this book offensive.

A tale of deceit and obsession to rival Alfred Hitchock's Vertigo. One of Dahl's weakest books with a very questionable moral. I think the reader easily understands why Mr. Hoppy stayed single for so long. Lock up your tortoises: there's a balcony bachelor on the loose.

Deeply disturbing how a man steals a womens pet to gain her love. Dahl is know for a child like horror/uncomfortable atmosphere but if it wasnt for the P.S at the end i wouldve gave it less then 1 star. Theres also a "teaching moment" in the beginning when Dahl tried to give history on tortoises being brought into europe from north africa, seemed very unsettling and didnt add anything to the plot.
