Beautiful writing and there's a lot of plot momentum propelling it forward, uncovering mysteries... I loved the ending, but everything it takes to get there never quite adds up. The abruptness with which the main character becomes paranoid & obsessed with a few cryptic clues from a total stranger is bewildering. Yes, she's alienated from those around her and traumatized from her past, but it's still a huge leap for her to upend her entire life over a dead woman with a journal, whether it's justified in the end or not.

As always Vandermeer makes me feel uncomfortable and on edge in his writings. Enjoyable ride.

I don't have heaps to say about this one. Very good but I struggle with thrillers that have alot of action. I found the ending very impactful and learnt a lot about hummingbirds and salamanders.

Themes: the environment, climate change, mystery, missions, obligations
