A riveting and environmentally-minded thriller and mystery novel, with all the respect for character and nature I’ve come to expect from Jeff VanderMeer. The audiobook’s narrator Lisa Flanagan was phenomenal!

Security consultant “Jane Smith” receives an envelope with a key to a storage unit. Inside, she finds a taxidermied hummingbird and clues about a taxidermied salamander. Silvina, the dead woman who left the note, is a reputed ecoterrorist and daughter of a wealthy industrialist. VanderMeer again twists the world we live in, a world ravaged by environmental devastation, into an unsettling mystery-thriller for his readers. Recommended.

Not for me. Almost every one of the 100+ sections tried to be deep and meaningful. The result was a novel that felt emotionally flat. Maybe that was the intent, written from the perspective of a confusing character with unclear motives.

I felt the climate disaster pieces of the book were an afterthought that felt forced, and didn’t connect to the plot until the last few pages.
