This book is dense and long, but truly a masterpiece of research. Definitely not for the casual reader or faint of heart. I especially appreciated the few moments where she tried to help us understand how the ordinary Romans lived.

Well written and somewhat interesting. Focused on a short period of the Roman Empire. The book is full of the authors assumptions without much, if any, support outside of her own opinions. Authoritative? No. Interesting? Somewhat.
