John Ciardi's Translation (New American Library) 1961. Definitely a lot more of a slog than the Inferno. I can see why most people stop at that one. I'm not going to bother with the Paradiso. There's a lot more thological allegory here, but much less crazy antics. Still plenty of digressions on medieval Italy, and discussions on morality etc that are hard to get through. Good translation though- it was well annotated. I'm not sure the poetry was fully captured though

Do I believe that the places Dante visits in his Divine Comedy actually exist? Definitely not, but that doesn’t make it a really good story. It’s quite different than Inferno, less interesting in my mind but also a bit more philosophical. I don’t think I liked it more than Inferno but it was still good. The historical figures in this one were a bit less noteworthy, but the scene where he finally finds Beatrice is among the best in these two books. We’ll see how the last book is soon enough.

While inherently less interesting than Inferno, this book is an extremely interesting exploration of how people turn away from “sin” (wrongdoing).
Graphic: Body horror
Moderate: Religious bigotry
