Cantoras seamlessly melds the stories of five queer women to explore the history of Uruguay, queer joy, life under a dictatorship, and the importance of community and making space for yourself in the world. This book runs the gamut of emotions, but leaves you with a sense of hope.

“Ocean as church (…) Woman’s body as church.”
A very beautiful book. I love swimming in the sea and lesbian sex so the ocean/beach as a metaphor for queerness and freedom really hit for me. And I enjoyed the commentary on patriarchy and what it means to live outside social norms and build community.
I did feel like the story became a bit contrived in the second half - the storylines got too inspirational and the dialogue stopped feeling real. I think the book spanned too long a time period and it felt rushed towards the end but it pulled me back in the last few pages. Overall an enjoyable read that resonated a lot
