One of the best, and saddest, books I have ever read. It shattered my heart many times. But at the same time, it left me with a twinge of hope. A really excellent read.

Ein unglaublich tolles Buch. Die Geschichte hat mich richtig in den Bann gezogen. Ich mag es sehr, wenn Bücher einen grossen Zeitrahmen umspannend erzählt werden.

It's a crazy long story with multiple characters since it follows a family through generations. This isn't a very happy story at all, it deals with a lot of real problems and bleak topics. However I liked how Lee seemed to balance the different viewpoints of each character. Neither the Koreans nor the Japanese characters with totally black or white.

It was a fascinating read but man, there was no warm feelings after finishing it.

This book is heartbreaking and man the ending was amazing. It’s very well done how the family despite constantly trying their very best, is constantly haunted by this ghost that follows them around, their Korean“ness”. The Korean diaspora in Japan still faces discrimination to this day and this book is eye opening to the more personal and emotional struggles that racism and the colonial mindset that’s instilled in Koreans from birth create. It is wonderfully written and engaging the whole way through, the only problem I have is that it sets up this side plot around page 350~ that just never gets mentioned again.
