Loved it, makes me curious about the asia, the impact of war, how Korea was before the invasion, and Japans historical racism.

Felt like following a family through generations, and getting to know each individual through their life and struggles, an unique experience.

Im saddened by their fates, and happy for their love

This book is very simply a damning indictment of the inability of the Japanese to accept outsiders (including Koreans). It uses a soap-like way of storytelling to evoke an emotional response from the reader, inviting you to emphathise with the Korean characters whose honesty, kindness and hard-working natures are ultimately not enough to break through the wall of mistrust and prejudice of the Japanese.

I really enjoyed the storytelling elements of this book, particularly the book's central character, Sunja, whom we follow from a young girl to an aged grandmother. Lee provides a very detailed and nuanced character study, delving deep into her thoughts, desires and inner turmoil.

Pachinko grabs you and stares you down while calmly, modestly sharing more than a lifetime of love and loss.
