This book was...I don't know. It was beautiful, it was frustrating, it was painful but all in a good way? I usually don't enjoy alternating timelines, but this book worked well with it, pulling the story along and filling the readers in on the characters past in a unique way. I didn't much enjoy Ellis, but I understand her personality and this feeling like no one is there for her. She doesn't feel like she has a place she fits, except with Easton, and then she feels like Easton threw her out...the whole thing was just well written. They're TEENAGERS, they're dramatic and angsty and don't know what they're doing. It was just a really well-written book, and as the first from the author, I can't wait to see what else she might bring to readers.

Wow that was an experience.
From the first chapter I knew this book would dig into the feelings I had buried in the depths of my mind, the place where I hide the worst time of my life. And that indeed did happen.

Each chapter was a deep dive into feelings of love, hate, confusion, sadness, grief about what could've been and the complicated state of being stuck feeling something you don't want to feel. If you ever had a first love that ended badly, this book will make you relieve everything you felt and will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions.

"Some Mistakes Were Made" that's true, but I can't find any in this book. I loved the writing, I think the style was perfect for the story, each character had their own voice and importance to the book and in general everything was well done.
A five stars book, without doubt.

I have not had a lot of luck with books this year. But in the end I am happy to say I did not DNF the book. In the end the book just seemed slow and boring to me.

~ Beautiful, Heart-Wrenching Debut ~

This book gave me so many emotionssss. I was so drawn in and just couldn’t put it down for a minute!! (Hence why I read it in a day)

Kristin is so talented at writing emotions and I loved how nuanced and realistic the fighting and feelings were. Too often, I feel like the miscommunication / big argument trope is over something petty or something that could be solved with a five minute, honest conversation, so I loved how complex and real this one was!! While I got frustrated with Ellis and Easton it wasn’t because their fight was stupid, I just wanted them to work it out and be happy

Some Mistakes Were Made feels like putting on your moody playlist at 2am when you go for a drive through the night, windows down as the wind messes up your hair. It feels like stormy afternoons where raindrops race down glass panels and you curl up in blankets wishing for warmth. It feels like crisp mornings of purple-gray dawn full of new beginnings and unlimited potential.

Okay. Can I just fangirl for a moment? This book…. Like, wow.

Some Mistakes Were Made was full of bickering, humor, and sibling relationships that are real, honest, and not dramatized in unrealistic portrayals of family. I really appreciated how Kristin’s characters each brought something to the story, and together created a story full of both beauty and pain–raw imperfection. The novel gave a perspective into broken families, broken relationships, and broken hearts.

I loved how the book was organized, chapters alternating between past and present in a clear way. So while you begin the story knowing nothing about why there are invisible walls and painful memories, you feel the emotion from knowing what once was in the past, and continue reading to find out what really happened. Kristin captivates you in a tale woven of broken dreams and emotional baggage as the young characters find themselves.

This is one of my favorite contemporary novels because it has everything I love: insecure characters, first love, beautifully organized plot, family life, emerging adults. What’s not to love?
Tucker’s humor, Easton’s mind reading, Ellis’ emotion, these elements of the characters drew me further into the story. Seeing Ellis struggle so much to figure out what love and family were to her is something many people can relate to. The people who did and did not support her brought up issues people don’t always think about such as the lack of communication of how people truly feel, and how dysfunctional families still continue on, whether that be in a healthy manner or not because they are just surviving. How it all came together was done beautifully, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry at the end.

I feel like the main character could’ve benefited from getting therapy instead of getting sent halfway across the country
