Set around the 1980 Gwangju uprising, a story of a middle school boy killed, as told from the viewpoints of several participants. This book does a great job showing the disparate and long lasting impacts of tyrannical acts. It is also very poignant in that South Korea still suffers from struggles with leaders who wish to impose martial law to eliminate dissent and stay in power.

Han Kang truly masters the art of perspective in her novel, Human Acts; she empathetically leads the reader into the minds of the dead, the souls, and the survivors of the 1980's student uprising and government massacre in Gwangju, South Korea. Heart-wrenching and graphically gruesome, yet hauntingly beautifully written.
