I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed this Bildungsroman set in 1939 Montana. It's a wonderfully evocative picture of the time and place and of our early-teens hero.

This is the best book I've read solely because of a Goodreads recommendation.

Blah! I will say that the prose were very lyrical, but not my kind of book. Coming-of-age story of a 15 year-old boy in 1930's Montana. It moves very slowly.

Beautiful, slow country. Peaceful. Slows down your mind and thoughts.

This coming of age story is a great read. The plot is slow moving but the land is so beautiful, the relationships so poignant and the history so fascinating that it pulled the book right along. The ending provides plenty of excitement as well as equal parts heartbreak and heartwarming. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Interesting fictional look at Montana in 1939.
The author has an interesting writing style that took me a while to warm up to but by the end of the book it felt like saying goodbye to old friends.
Book was recommended by Stan Oleson who has a review worth reading.

Panifully slow read. Some parts were very good, but when I was looking for Doig's great storytelling, I found a lot of rambling. And rambling. And rambling. I went back to look at other's reviews of this and I guess this is a common theme in relation to this book. From what others say, the next in the series is much better, so I would continue to give this series a try. However, I think I will need a break befoelre I go on to the next one.
