Finished this book in a day and loved it! The ending and twist fell a bit flat for me for some reason, but I loved the whole “unsettling small town” plot and it really did remind me of Twin Peaks. Can’t wait for the next book!

I really didn't expect to be on the side of a government agent, especially not one who fought in a pointless war and CHEATED ON HIS WIFE but he proved to be really smart and the most capable person to figure out the truth and that's what matters most in the situation the people of Wayward Pines all find themselves in. I did enjoy reading about how he was able to navigate the difficult situations that came his way without really getting caught and barely escaping death multiple times. Was it realistic, not necessarily but it could happen to guy that is lucky enough to have his wife take him back after cheating on her. And the vignettes of Ethan surviving torture remind us that he can really do anything for what he believes in. Although I don't really appreciate the subtext of the only person of color mentioned in the whole book being an Arab torturer. It felt a bit like  propaganda at times and I did not like that at all.
I didn't fully enjoy being gaslight alongside the protagonist but it did make it easier to identify with him and root for him. He isn't perfect, he's still talking about how beautiful Kate is and how he loved her while he's still with his wife which is very frustrating to read. It is interesting to read from a male perspective how men view themselves, the women they supposedly love and the world in general. I think it adds depth to his character that he is not infallible, his weakness is his emotion. Which is very interesting in a story like this where he has almost no one except himself and is relying on his own sense of reality that everyone around him is so desperately trying to warp. The truth was compelling and realistic seeming enough to suspend disbelief and I'm excited to see where the rest of the trilogy takes the story. I watched a couple episodes of the show they made on Fox a couple years ago and I remembered some of it which inhibited some of my enjoyment but from here on out, I know nothing that is going to happen.

One day I might read a Blake Crouch book that isn’t absolutely fucking mental.

But today is not that day.
