This book was a DNF at 100 pages. The idea of the story and the set up seemed like it would be amazing, but I couldn't get into it. I didn't enjoy the writing style, the main character was a sly, little turd, and the paedophilia accusations in the shop lifting scene 100% rubbed me the wrong way.
Then I heard that there are more flippant rape/abuse scenes later in the book, and that the author is a major homophobe, so I stopped trying and just returned the book to the library.

The story is compelling enough to be interesting but not too complicated that I get lost while listening to it. I like how their isn't an overbearing love story written within it either. I look forward to the next book.
Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.
This was definitely slow going at first. It took me little over 50% to really get into it, but this is different than the usual urban fantasy I read.
So it's not exactly my style, but I didn't hate it. I am going to read the next book at least, as that was recommended and I suppose I want to know what happens to the main characters.

Mixture of the real world and some mythological world. All kind of weird.
I kept wanting it to get somewhere but by the time it got there I wasn't really invested anymore.

Some of the gods of old live on compounds right here in the USA. Their children have a variety of powers, but we humans can't tell because they disguise themselves as the barely literate, unwashed poor. It has been ages since a child of the gods had the powers to be a Gatemage. Until now.
The first half was terrible. I was super disappointed and planned on giving it 2 stars and giving up on this series. I guess it turned itself around though, and was more readable about halfway through. I have no idea why, but I absolutely love Orson Scott Card's Enderverse. I was hoping this series would at least live up to that but it is soooo not up to par. I do plan to finish out the series though.
Wasn't what I was expecting. Just wasn't what I was looking for.
Moderate: Sexual content
Plot: Danny is from a family of mages who are desperately trying to hold on to their powers after years of isolation from their homeworld, Westil. They are slowly weakening because a long time ago a gatemage closed the way back to their homeworld. Danny has to escape from his family and into the real world... where he learns of a whole new world that he didn't know existed. There are Westilians everywhere, not part of one of the royal families. He learns more about his family’s past, about Westil’s past, and more about the banned knowledge of gatemagery.
Characters: Danny is a bit of prankster. Throughout the book you learn that he can’t really help it and he does mature a bit by the end. He has a snarky mouth and likes to play tricks on people just because he thinks it’s funny. These traits would probably annoy the crap outta me in real life, but reading about it is fun :) His foster family, the Silvermans, were the perfect answer for Danny. They truly cared about him. But they still let him live his life and learn what he needed to learn, despite the risks.
Other Stuffs: Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite authors of all time. I fell in love with Ender’s Game years ago and haven’t looked back. I am making it a goal of mine to read Pathfinder sometime this month, I’ve had it for awhile I just haven’t had the chance to read it.
