3.75⭐ This was very fun and quite entertaining! I especially loved the secret society plotline. I just wish I would have read it closer to finishing Falling Kingdoms so the history made more sense

Too many characters, cringey dialogue, and a completely unnecessary love story.

I swear Morgan Rhodes is a genius. This was so good!

There's three different character's perspective, so it can be kind of slow in the beginning trying to learn about all of our characters and getting into the book. However after couple of chapters, I promise you can't put this book down.

There was a lot of totally unexpected surprises and some sacrifices. Oh, that made me sad.

I'm just really excited to for the next book! Cannot see what will happen to our lovely characters. And of course, I always have a weakness for dark characters... Someone save Farrell please!

So I rushed to finish this book before The Darkest Magic came out thinking I would pick The Darkest Magic up right away but I should have know. The book has been out for a week and a half and I have not even started it.

This book was very interesting. We have two coinciding stories being told that are both interconnected in a way that is still mostly unknown. These two stories are told from four different characters point of views. You have Maddox, Farrell, Becca, and Crystal. One story is in modern day Toronto and the other is ancient Mytica. It was fascinating to read this book and see how Morgan Rhodes was connecting the two very different worlds.

This book gave a lot of great backstory on Mytica and how they go to where they are in the Falling Kingdoms Series and I really loved the extra information. As for the Toronto story, I have been to Toronto only once in my life but I knew exactly where a lot of the landmarks Morgan Rhodes uses were. And I loved that she was descriptive enough and used names that I recognized, it just added to my investment in this story.

I definitely have a favorite character after this book but based on what happened I do not want to say who it is. I will just keep that to myself and see what said character does in the next book.

Despite the fact that I read this book and the second book in a matter of days, I can’t give it more than one star. The author announced that there will probably never be a third book (even though this is advertised as a trilogy), thus this series will never be finished and I feel like I’ve wasted my time on a story that will never be complete. There are so many cliff hangers and details left unfinished. Don’t waste your time on this series!

"As she passed him without even glancing in his direction, he caught the scent of strawberries.
Strawberries were his favorite fruit."

Well, then. Here's my first (and probably last) strawberry review (you're welcome, dickhead) -

Note : please bear in mind that 2 stars from me means that it's okay, and it definitely is, I guess. Not nearly enough to create a great book, but okay. Yet there's nothing in [a:Morgan Rhodes|5295120|Morgan Rhodes|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1354050427p2/5295120.jpg]'s writing, plot or characters that makes me want to go further than the 50% I read. So damn flat, the whole of them. Good ideas, failed execution.

Why do I let this author keep doing this to me.

4/5 stars

First of all for those who are curious you do not have to read [a:Morgan Rhodes|5295120|Morgan Rhodes|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1354050427p2/5295120.jpg]'s other series, Falling Kingdoms before reading this book. It is based in the same world, but completely different.

[b:A Book of Spirits and Thieves|22571365|A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves, #1)|Morgan Rhodes|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1429026765s/22571365.jpg|42037808] does have several point of views we follow throughout the book. We follow the prospective or Crystal,Farrell, and Maddox.

I personally felt knowing nothing about the book helps when reading this book.

The characters were fairly interesting. First of, Crystal's mom owns a bookshop. One of my dream Jobs. Second, Adam. Adam is one of the side characters I found really interesting. I really hope we get more of him in the next book.

3.5

I really enjoyed all of the characters and can't wait to read the next book.
