I thought this was such a captivating story, it really drew me in and kept me turning the pages to find out what could possibly happen next. I honestly didn’t see the story turning out the way it did and I think that’s part of why I enjoyed it so much. There was one reveal that was just so unexpected, it quite literally left my jaw hanging. The only thing that took away from my enjoyment of this story was Liam. I thought he was a class A jerk and he drove me nuts the whole story!

I didn't think this was quite as strong a novel as the other Diane Chamberlain novel that I've read, [b:The Midwife's Confession|10059498|The Midwife's Confession|Diane Chamberlain|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1323870279s/10059498.jpg|14955690], and it's clear that her writing has matured since she wrote this book. But I still found the story very intriguing, even if it felt more like a saga/romance than [b:The Midwife's Confession|10059498|The Midwife's Confession|Diane Chamberlain|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1323870279s/10059498.jpg|14955690]. I like sagas and romances, so I wasn't particularly disappointed! And honestly, the hippie colony at the start of the novel was what made me check this book out of the library. Bizarrely, this is the second book I've read this year that featured a hippie commune in it. I also loved the dual-time narrative of this book, it has to be one of my favourite features to come across in novels, whether they're sagas or romances or mysteries. It added a lot of depth to the novel, and I think I might have ended up caring more about the historical characters than the modern-day ones by the end of the book. And I did not guess the twist that was revealed at the end! 4*

Another reviewer described this as bland and I totally concur. It's readable, but there's no depth to it; the characters are thinly fleshed out and the writing is pedestrian. Nice sense of place when the author describes the commune by the coast, but other than that fairly forgettable book.

3.5/5 stars! Another good DC read. Chamberlain has a way of making devastating circumstances beautiful? Another sad but beautiful and inspiring story!

I want to preface my review with saying I typically really love novels by this author. But this one...I HATED. I disliked it within the first 20 pages but wanted to see how it ended. It didn’t get any better.

The characters were shallow, the author made such a big deal about one character’s weight that it was uncomfortable, and the ending was too fairy tale and feel good for me.

Bleh. I’m glad I have a big stack of library books - hopefully it pulls me out of my reading slump I’m in.

I love how Diane Chamberlain's books always have a twist I don't see coming!

***Major spoilers***

Huge shock that Carlynn was actually Lisbeth! It made me like her a bit less when I read that, though I don't know why. Very unexpected twist!

This was was my first Diane Chambelain novel. The story itself was average, but the ending was so surprising to me that I had to give it 4+ stars.

Enjoyable but also predictable, I had guessed the ending within the first three chapters. the motivation did surprise me a little. Solid imagery, interesting read.
