yasunari kawabata shows more than tells, and people either love it or don't. i don't know which category of people i fall under but i am left a little dissatisfied by the characters themselves.
the storyline, the imagery that the author creates, the underlying sadness in each moment pictured, or the writing style; i have complaints with none of these. they are beautiful, and nothing short. but somehow, i found myself wishing that there were more of the characters for me to devour. the characters weren't shallow, were fleshed out well enough, but...in some ways, they felt unalive.
perhaps it was to parallel the overall aura of the book, who knows, but i wanted the characters to be prominent more than anything.
the ending as well felt uncalled for.
nonetheless, this was a good respite from reality just as the snow country proves to be for shimamura.
i couldn't devote enough of myself to this book due to various reasons and i wish to pick this up again maybe in a year or two, give it another chance because i feel i'll love it then.
this feels heavily like a case of right book, wrong time and i don't just want to dismiss it.

This book confused me big time. Literally nothing happens except numerous descriptions of snow and an older married man being creepy toward a young geisha? This book was published in the 50s and I guess is considered classic Japanese literature but it was the most boring book I’ve ever read. It’s also a really short book but it felt like 700 pages. I didn’t like the writing style, and I don’t think it was a problem of translation. I hated the characters, they are dull and flat. The story structure (if it can even be called a story) is disjointed and makes no sense.
