Backman, you scallywag, you did it again!

I'd been holding on to this one for a while, ad you try and sip the good stuff, not slurp it all in. This is yet another one of his books that fans shouldn't miss. The characters are astonishingly funny, the plot unexpectedly unique and the Backman-esque nuggets profoundly heartbreaking, funny but always insightful.

"That's the power of literature, it can act like little love letters between people who can only explain their feelings by pointing at other people's." ❤️

Edited to add: Rereading this 2 years after I first read it was just as good as the first time. I love this book so fucking much

Fredrick Backman is magic. His writing is truly earth shattering. This book made me laugh, cry, think, and reflect. It was clever and witty and full of humanity. It was a mixture of a comedy, a mystery, and character studies all mixed into one book, and I loved it.

You know when you finish a really good book, and that last sentence is short and simple but impactful and effectively wraps up the entire story? Well Backman finishes every chapter making you feel that way. I constantly wanted to keep reading, and for the last hundred pages, I kept thinking that each chapter would be the last because the last lines were always so intentional and perfect. I’ve never read another authors book that made me feel that way (and A Man Called Ove has the same quality!).

Also, Fredrik Backmans writing kinda reminds me of an adult Junie B Jones novel, which of course makes for such an enjoyable experience.

One of my favorite books of the year, I already want to reread. Can not recommend enough!

I read half of this in public at a silent book club yesterday and failed the silent part by laughing out loud every three pages. And it's been a while since I finished a book in floods of tears but I'm just floating along on a little sofa raft right now. Honestly I thought I was going to give up on this book 50 or so pages in, I really do not care for the author commenting on human nature in the prose thing, but then the mystery was too compelling and I kept going. Just like the story says you should.
