one of the best if not the best book i have ever read. everything was perfect. the variety of chapter length, the character development, the different perspectives, the feeling of getting to know the characters, the perfectly placed inside jokes that makes you feel like you’re in on something special, just PERFECT. the humor is AMAZING and oh my god i had the lowest expectations for this book but it has blown me away.

This was incredible. Deeply emotional and darkly funny, Backman really hit it out of the park with this one. The plot was very minimal, however this was to the benefit of the characters. The characterization in this book was some of my favorite ever. I hated them until I loved them and I would read a book about any character in this book. My one minor nitpick is that there’s a twist in the story that just... doesn’t work for me.

Compelling. Well written. And so many good one-liner nuggets (especially about what it's like to be a parent, but also, life *sigh*). Loved the interconnected stories and quirky dialogue. Definitely recommending to other people.
2024 reread: just as good the second time. Slow to get into, but poignant about humanity in a way few books are able to capture. Grief, love, parenthood, death, monotony, careers, and how we all affect one another in little ways. A great read.

It look a bit longer to get into the story than I expected, but I fell in love with it by the end!
