I loved the way this book came together at the end. It felt a little boring in the middle, but I feel like the author put a lot of cool twists into the story.

3,5. Goed boek in het algemeen, maar had wat tijd nodig om aan de soms wel 'lastige' mensen te wennen.

DID NOT FINISH: 12%

I was simply NOT vibing with the writing style here, at all. Felt very... chaotic? Sporadic? And sometimes way too many very short, clipped sentences all together for an entire page. "Jack did x. Then Jim did y. Then Jack said xyz. Jim replied abd. Jack didn't like that. Jim didn't care. Jack said something else. Jim replied something back. The other person in the scene did something else." This is not a literal quote from the book obviously (lol), just a visualization of how the writing style felt to me. It didn't flow in a way that worked for my brain.

Also, already I am IMMENSELY annoyed with most of the characters. The realtor acting like she had just done several lines of coke one right after the other... what in gods name was she fucking going on about???? The 20 year old bank teller who sounded like a 12 year old (which to be fair, was pointed out by a different character, but then brushed off as "He was 39 so the difference between 14 and 20 didn't seem so large" but I'm 39 and while yeah 20 year olds often do sound quite obviously YOUNNNGGGG to me... they don't sound like literal 12 year olds. Huge difference there.) ...

I just don't think this is the book for me! I could tell I was just going to be stressed out and irritated as all fuck throughout it so I cut my losses.

What is it about this author that I love so much. It’s chaotic and crazy. I have to read it a second time in order to get all the nuance and points.  It is such a good book.  A bank robber, a house viewing and a rabbit.  Just unbelievable how he connects it all together.

so chaotically good

I really enjoyed how all the characters of this ensemble book came together. Its such a unique exploration of humanity and our view of others. Being in a hostage situation with vastly different people than yourself forces new perspectives and empathy. This book had me laughing, tearing up and relating to the characters throughout. The way Berkman writes is unique and quotable. The timeline connects the characters and the story together and is done well.

Would be fun as a "love actually" style movie!
