Overall:
Not necessarily a slow burn but things between the characters don't kick off till a few chapters in. I'm enjoying the variety of mental illnesses showcased in this book versus your typical 'schizophrenic' and 'psychotic.' Tons of character development. Great twists and turns and introductions of new characters. I honestly really liked this series. I will be picking up the series with the 3 new characters mentioned in book 3. This is an MMMMMF! Four of the M's are together! Loved it.. I'm not a fan of every other chapter, especially the Brooklyns. I'd like to see more from the MMC's.

Dnf for my mental health not saying the book is bad it’s actual kinda good but really triggering
Fantastic trilogy
Super dark, but the plot is amazing. Lots of twists and turns, secrets, dark pasts, trauma, illegal and immoral activities, and vulnerable teens and young adults.
Brooklyn, the FMC, is a troubled girl, who grew up orphaned in a group home. Diagnosed with schizophrenia after murdering her abusive boyfriend after assaulting her, she's arrested and locked away in a psychiatric institution. After nearly a year there and no improvement, she's forced to the Blackwood Institute as a last resort for rehabilitation.
Our MMCs, Kade, Eli, Phoenix, and Hudson, are also troubled young men. Kade is the straight-arrow of the bunch. Hudson is violent and uses his fists for all of his problems. Phoenix is a recovering addict and ex drug lord. Eli is mute.
Kade, Eli and Phoenix are immediately drawn to Brooklyn's flame. Her first interaction with Hudson was a great surprise. They all struggle to survive Blackwood, and try to hold on to their makeshift family.
Things are dicy, Brooklyn is dragged away from the guys and sent back to where she came from, Clearwater, and the guys fracture, trying to cope with the loss. We're introduced to a new MMC, Seven. Seven is a psychopath, but helps Brooklyn keep a grasp on her humanity. They keep each other alive, while locked away.
I can't say much more than that without spoiling. The details were gruesome and dark, and you feel like you're living along side the characters, feeling what they're experiencing. It's not easy; it's uncomfortable, heartbreaking, and you will cry. But, it will be worth it.
