I’m deeply frustrated because the premise is great, but every opportunity was missed. I spent the middle third of the book annoyed that the protagonist didn’t “get it” yet. I think that pacing is crucial for a book this short, and the work was put in all the wrong areas.

Other gripes: I have *zero* issue with nb / alternate pronouns. HOWEVER. I do not feel that the pronouns the author invented did anything to move the story forward. It felt like an interesting idea she had, but that wasn’t connected to a specific project, and she wedged it in here.

I wasn’t keen on the humor. I felt that it cheapened the book and stilted the sense of dread / suspense that I really wanted. It also felt wayyyy too modern for a book that’s supposed to be set in 1890.

I feel like such a hater, but I was really hyped for this book and felt like I could do a better rewrite… that’s not how I want to feel walking away from books.

Edit:
OH YEAH, AND ANOTHER THING!

Why is this book, based on a story by a famously *american* author, set in Europe?
