This story has elements of a fairy tale (or perhaps "faerie" would be more appropriate, since it is reminiscent of stories in which the fair folk steal children away to a different world). There are lots of connections to Celtic mythology as well, with the shape-changing Pucks (one of whom is named, appropriately, "Phouka") and villainous imposter, the Mor. Add in herb lore and a feisty girl protagonist named Fer, and this shapes up to be an enjoyable (if somewhat predictable, it is for kids) read.

If you read and enjoyed this, you might want to check out some of the other books [a:Sarah Prineas|827236|Sarah Prineas|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1206233414p2/827236.jpg] has written. An imaginative story about a girl that opens the way to a different land. The book was a quick read but I enjoyed it a lot.

I read this because I saw some middle school aged girls animatedly discussing it and I was curious. I thought it was very enjoyable. There's a plucky girl who knows healing arts, a Way into another world though a pool of water, a boy who can turn into a dog or a horse, and a sickness in the land keeping spring from arriving. There's nothing new here, but it's a very enjoyable book for children (girls or boys) who liked the Narnia chronicles.

I can just tell this book isn't going to be for me, isn't going to astound me. Three or so chapters in and we've jumped straight into the action but I know nothing about the characters or setting which has stopped me from connecting I think. I also am not keen on the 'parent/guardian not telling the kid vital info to protect them' trope, which I can tell is going to feature in this.

This was a quick and easy read, but I wish it had been more detailed. The world didn't really come alive in my head and the writing felt a little basic. I didn't really get a good sense of who the characters were and I'm not particularly attached to them. I do really like Fer's grandmother though. Some things also didn't make sense in my opinion - Fer didn't seem all that interested in her grandmother's work but all of a sudden she was a great healer. She was also absolutely miserable at school and her grandmother knew the reason but didn't seem to care about it at all? I feel like these are parts were the book could have benefitted from being a little longer. I did like the ending though and I am considering reading the other books since they're all under 300 pages anyway. I'm curious to see what adventures Fer gets up to in the future.
