not at all what I thought the book was going to be but fantastic regardless, I flew through it and found it unexpected in all sorts of surprising ways, thoroughly recommend!

This is a tentative four stars. It turns out that audio was an incredibly BAD choice on this one. There's so much going on, there are so many characters, and so many POVs that I quickly became lost.
I've read four Dick books in the last month and it's funny how I tend to remember them as fun. Somehow I tend to forget that they squish your brain into a new shape very quickly and actually make you think. I enjoyed this one even though I was quite lost. And it was actually a pretty disturbing book. I can see why he said that he wanted to write a sequel but didn't like the way that writing the book made him feel.
I especially loved the story within a story method that was used. Grasshopper was a fascinating look at another possible universe. Alt-history within alt-history.
I really need to reread this so I can catch all of the things that I missed.
