He has a way of writing and telling a story that makes it feel familiar and entirely alien simultaneously.

It took me a month to finish this.... this book put me in the biggest reading slump of the year.
Ok soo.....
I love Philip K Dick. I’ve read The game players of titan, The three stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Ubik by Dick and they were mind blowing. I loved them so much he quickly became one of my favorite SF writers. I went into this with high expectations especially since a lot of people praised this to be one of his best works but for me it was a bit of a disappointment. I originally wanted to give it 2 stars, but the ending raised everything up a star.
Sadly, I did not connect with any character, I found myself skipping through certain parts because I JUST DID NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT HE WAS SELLING.
There were moments when I just wanted to dnf it. I did not like Juliana one bit, she felt forced into the story so much, out of place.
This does not mean Philip K Dick is no longer one of my favorite writers. No. I will still read his work, I will still look up to him, but this book just proved that you can’t really like everything someone had written. I somehow hate myself for not liking this but this is the way things turned out.

Just hard to imagine that these kinds of feelings still exist in 2025.  The US has learned NOTHING from history.

fairly good but i feel like it’s lacking…something? certainly an interesting inversion of the cold war and american occupation of japan, and one that could have been explored further. some of the political musing was interesting (the american petit-bourgeois and quislings instantly cosigning fascist thought, for instance), and some fun musing on art and historiosity. i did find the plot a little incoherent at times though..
