This story sets in motion the particular world of T Kingfisher that I have fallen deeply in love with. This book felt a little incomplete in its scope, which will surely be rectified in the sequel, but I was hoping for a more satisfying ending.

The characters a likable and flawed in very relatable ways. It has the classic T Kingfisher characterization of wit and the heroine being pretty normal which is lovely. The world building and character development is not quite as good as her later books, but does  enough to still carry the story and make it compelling.

A group of criminals go on a suicide mission to figure out how giant machine soldiers are made and to destroy them. The banter, the adventure, the building of friendships under difficult circumstances, the creepiness (there are demons involved), all of it is just so fun!

I so enjoy spending time in this world. These characters are wonderful, the humor is just right. The adventure keeps me interested, but it’s the characters that I care about. Looking forward to the next book to hopefully get some answers. I expect something spooky.

It's not that I disliked this book, I just didn't find it nearly as engaging as some of Kingfisher's other work. I'm not as attached to any of the characters as I was with other books written by the author, and I felt like this one took a while to get off the ground as a good chunk of the book is them preparing for the trip. The problem with that is things don't start getting really interesting until they're on the road.

I do like that this author does fantasy in a way that feels unique and fresh to me. There's nothing wrong with elves and dwarfs and dragons if that's your thing, but I very much prefer books that provide me with unique creatures, something Kingfisher does in spades with every one of her books that I've read. Even so, I can't say I've found the creatures she's so far presented as interesting or as much fun as some of the creatures in her other books.

So, yeah, I'm basically just very lukewarm about this one. I do want to know what ultimately happens, and I already have the second book, so I'm off to read that one next. I'm hoping things will improve and that the pace will become snappier as it did toward the end of this book.
