The book is actually chock full of interesting and valuable homesteading information, however the heavy handed political and social criticisms do get rather tiresome. The couple’s endeavors are to be admired for sure and there is value and truth in some of what the authors discuss regarding cultural obsession with materialism and wealth building.

I finally finished "The Good Life" which documents Helen and Scott Hearing's tale of living simply, and with minimum cash.

It made me so aware of how dependent we have become on salaries, purchased goods, and doing things the easy way.

You have to admire their tenacity, and abilities to accept rural life.

While the Nearings can get a little preachy about their lifestyle at times, it really didn't detract from enjoyment of "The Good Life: Helen and Scott Nearing's Sixty Years of Self-Sufficient Living." The book basically tells the story of how they started their eco-friendly farms -- first one in Vermont and when that area became too populated, the moved onto Maine. I found the book inspiring enough that I wish I had enough land to start my own rural homestead following their practical advice.

While this isn’t exactly a page turner, I’m giving it 5 stars because it is JAM PACKED with information about how to start your own homestead. A perfect reference guide to take and adapt for your own needs!

Fascinating and detailed account of self-sustaining life, partially outside the cash economy. The Nearings were clearly extremely principled folks. While I may not agree with every principle they espoused, I have so much respect for people who dedicate their lives to living their values. They put in a lot of work to prove that their vision of the world is possible, at least to some degree.

Also, I will probably reference this book in the future for cold climate gardening and composting tips.

An interesting, if not entirely practical, account of two of the original "back to the land"-ers.
