Maybe I chose the wrong book to read for my first Iris Murdoch experience. The book is okay. It's a little wishy washy, far too descriptive to begin with. There's is some events that happen eventually however it's hard to enjoy when the lead character is so unlikeable. I'm not sure if Murdoch has written this annoying character as our protagonist for a reason but either way it was a little dreary for me to follow this delusional man.

I wasn’t sure how to take this book. It’s written in a serious, almost dark tone but at times had all the comings and goings of a good farce.

An intricate look into the mind of Charles as he moves from being unaware of his many faults and goes through some self reflection before learning all about himself ..... or else he’s entirely deluded and possibly paranoid.

There’s a good look at the complexities of human emotions, behaviour and relationships. There’s even a short measure of mystical buddhism.

It has enough to keep you interested ..... just as well as it’s a fairly long one

Still mulling over how to talk about this one. Charles Arrowby is retired from a life in the theatre, he moves to a seaside cottage to get away from it all, except the past never lets him go.

A novel about jealousy and obsession, delusion and reality, aging and (personal) history, marriage, masculinity and misogyny, and transcendent love in all its forms.

Iris Murdoch is a remarkable talent. Her use of first person is exquisite, and the characters who shine through beyond what Charles thinks of them is a testament to her skill. This book was surprisingly plotty for such a dense thematic book and I really recommend it for almost anybody.
