Beautifully written. It starts out slow but soon I was drawn into the story of an obsession and couldn’t put it down.
I almost don't know how to review this - because whilst I was reading it, and when I just finished it, I HATED it!
I thought it was too pompous, too long-winded, too philosophical, too self-indulgent.
Then I forgot about it for a while, and it popped into my mind about a month after I finished. I could now think of it from a 'bird's eye view' or something - I was literally imagining the creaky cold house on the hill by the shore, as though from above. I imagined Arrowby pottering around, pretending like he has a clue, but no. I then imagined all these characters who come into his life from London, the once-glamorous, now-faded actresses and actors, and watching the havoc unfold (Benny Hill music would almost be appropriate at that point).
The more I thought about it, the more I absolutely enjoyed thinking about it. I don't know why I couldn't enjoy it while I was actually reading it! But the fact that I still can't get this book out of my head a whole two years after reading it, means that it just has to be re-read.
