my first impression of this book was that it was pretty okay … but then i realized i read it all in one sitting. while it wasn’t anything particularly innovative i did enjoy the concept and the quirkiness of some of the characters (i wanted more luis and xavier!). of course, i’m always appreciative of queer & trans joy, esp. in YA, but … i am so sick of the clocky trans trope. maybe that’s a personal gripe but i would like to see more books that focus less on “oh no they’re going to clock me for my past” and more on “i am trans and i am proud.” that being said, i wish there was also more romance? i loved the miscommunication/enemies-to-lovers trope but the payoff was a little weak. wished there was more scenes like their first kiss. i love the cover art though, that’s what drew me in. overall, it was cute. i’m happy i read it. i had a good time.

Aww that was a really cute and fun read! I loved the whole boarding school set up and that they were roommates. Charlie is such a nice and likeable protagonist and you can really feel his struggles. Meanwhile Jasper is just different. He is soo dramatic and over the top to the point where he has a life sized cut out of himself. In the beginning i thought he was really funny but felt more like a character who is just comic relief. But throughout the story we got to know him better and see that he is really caring and sweet - especially to Charlie.
He fell for Charlie two years ago at camp and remained heartbroken since then. His feelings are so honest and pure, it's so cute^^
I really like Jasper as a character.
He and Charlie are really sweet together and i like it that they have their fair share of problems and arguments but you still feel their connection and that they care for each other. Despite all that. And they had really good banter.
I wished that the end scene was a bit longer though.

thought i wouldn’t be able to get through it at first because it was just too over the top but it got better. cute!

hmarie1197's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I want to like Powars’ books SO much, but they miss the mark for me. The plot and characters felt way too similar to The Borrow a Boyfriend Club. The one thing that kept me hanging on for as long as I did was Jasper - what a weirdo (affectionate). I adored him.
