What a brilliant interweaving of characters. Steinbeck is so good at that. The book takes you into the lives of these people living transaction to transaction. It’s fascinating to think about what makes a good person in this environment, who is trustworthy, and who is worth the credit. Its difficult to see the direct effect of social accountability on forwarding credit. But when you read something that takes a fine comb to small business and poverty you can see the ethics behind it all.

DNF. No real plot, no character development, this isn't for me.

Very much enjoyed reading a story set in Monterey, just pictured Cannery Row the way it's been the last few years when I'd go. Some passages here and there were genuinely so cool, well-written, poignant but for some reason most of it was okay (and not more, or excellent). Loved the go-with-the-flow taoism of it. Loved the little snippets of the other inhabitants. Found the Palace Flophouse and the boys interesting to read about, and Doc and Lee as well, but wasn't even nearly blown away or anything.
