⭐️⭐️⭐️

WTF... like what did I just read!!!! Because I feel unlike most who pick up this book I actually went in totally blind. I just saw it in a bookstore and picked this one up... so then when I shuffle over to Goodreads to find out more about this book and see the reviews... I was apprehensive, anxious and kinda excited to see what all this hype / controversy was about. And let me just say this book was a ride.

The writing isn't great, let's be honest. If I hear god golly lolly or whatever tf it was one more time I will probably dissolve into a puddle of

I was pretty hooked throughout and  sucked in by the end. Sad and messed up thriller.  I understand the meaning behind the title now.
Reminded me of the show Yellowjackets as I’m watching it currently

So positives: this book certainly had something to say, and I felt it said it well. The book is forever pursuing one question: are you doomed to be the version of yourself that others say that you are? A complex character study is drawn through this question. Cathy and Christopher find themselves becoming the people that they are condemned to be, and then they find themselves rejecting this version of themselves. This is done very well, especially in the context of Christian Fundamentalism.

V.C. Andrews also has a way of making characters that commit the most atrocious acts sympathetic. The Mother and Christopher are people that I felt deeply empathetic towards, and I felt myself close to understanding acts that I have almost never understood before through these characters.

That being said, Flowers in the Attic committed a cardinal sin of horror: it was flat out boring. I really had to slog my way through it. There was no real way to lightly connect one horrific act from another, like most horror books can do. The attic setting simply did not provide a compelling or serene enough environment to smoothly transition one earth-shattering event from another. This provided for a disjointed and boring read, unfortunately.
