Morgan Matson lover til' the day I die, so I thought it was time to go back to the beginning.
The story is very reminiscent of the MM books I've come to know (Since You've Been Gone, The Unexpected Everything, Save the Date), but it has its own footing to catch. MM is the queen of mundane adventures.
I loved Amy and Roger and their journey they took together across the country, all the people they met and the things they saw pushing them closer and closer together. Big ups to Bronwyn and Lucien.
One thing I really just didn't love was that Amy's mother totally abandoned her kid for an entire month only TWO MONTHS after her FATHER DIED in accident she was apart of, like??? That is some next level grieving that needs to take place and instead you just leave her ALONE FOR A WHOLE MONTH! Roger, a literal stranger, cared more about Amy's wellbeing than her own mother did, it seems.

Crying score: Yeah. Just, yeah.

I don't know why it took me so long to pick up this book. I'm regretting that. It was a great story about a girl navigating through grief and loss on a road trip with an unexpected friend/love interest. I enjoyed Amy & Roger's trek across America and the things they experience and learned along the way. There were a few important flashbacks that I thought brought a lot to the story. I do have to admit I thought this book ended too soon and I desperately need an epilogue. I also had some iffy feelings about the ages of Amy and Roger.

Despite the myriad of complaints I am about to write, I did like this book. But what am I if not a complainer?
First, why, in all of Morgan Matson's books, do the high school main characters date 18/19 year olds in college. Is that not a little weird?? Like I know it's a 2-ish year age gap but high school and college are wildly different places.

Second, what psychopath of a mom cuts her teenage daughter off financially when SHE'S the one making her drive cross country? And what right does she have to be pissed that she took a detour? Give the girl a break her father just died 3 fucking months ago dude. Pay attention to your son that you threw into rehab maybe?? Instead of making him someone else's problem? That made me mad honestly. Like here's your daughter that doesn't normally break rules and you get mad at her for detouring on a trip you made her take. Sure.

Third, about the localities: who on god's green earth has ever thought Kentucky smelled good. I live 20 minutes from Kentucky - it does NOT smell like how she describes it. Also, ain't NO FUCKIN WAY Amy has never heard of sweet tea before are you actually jokingggg. This book was written in 2010 not the 1800s. Be so serious PLEASE. Last bit on this: since when is saying "yep" a "cowpoke" thing? I live in the north-eastern reaches of the midwest and we say that here. They say that literally everywhere. And since when is Dairy Queen seedy????

My last gripe is Hadley. I know she's meant to be terrible, but would it have been that hard to make her a normal person? She is so not worth the effort Roger put into her. Why do people always go for girls like this. She was a red flag from the beginning bestie !!! Not trying to victim blame Roger but come on. Also I get this is the point of her character and Roger's part of the trip but whatever.

ANYWAY. Cute read. Very summery. Made me cry near the end. Yay.
