Persuasion by Jane Austen is one of my favourite books of all time. I’ve always had a strange relationship with the classics, filled with a sense of dread every time I pick one up thinking I wouldn’t be able to follow what was happening, a time too old-fashioned for me to connect with. Persuasion is a book I read in school for English back when I was 14, and while I can’t say I loved it back then, there was something about it that I remember to this day that drew me back into it now - and for me to tune into my instincts and pick this up again so impulsively over the course of January was probably the best decision I’ve made in a long time.

Persuasion is the story of Anne Elliott, and her relationship with Captain Wentworth - 8 years prior, she was persuaded by her closest family to call off her engagement to him on the basis of him not being affluent or successful enough. She spends a decade of her life regretting the decision she’s made, and by fate their paths cross once more when they are much older, where he is more successful and still single. It’s a book that feels so tender and poised, claimed Austen’s most mature book for good reason. It’s a story of two people who have grown apart over the years and still find a way back to each other, moulding into one another so seamlessly despite the years having taken a toll on them. Perhaps the most famous quote from this book is also the one that hits me the deepest, the one that makes you yearn for the love that Austen has so beautifully expressed in her pages - “You have pierced my soul. I am half agony, half hope ... I have loved none but you.”

Austen is truly a master of the timeless classic, this one no exception and arguably her best. In her usual fashion, the prose is laced with sharp wit and apt social commentary, but what will stick with you the most about Persuasion is how realistic the affection between these two characters is, a story recognisable even today - two people who are forced into maturity before they can truly understand how much they want each other.
