This book is a disturbing insight as to how abusers justify their actions. It was like watching a terrible crime being committed right in front of me. The way they made it so theatrical, so playful, made it even more terrifying. The fact that they convinced themselves that they were doing what was best for their daughter was even worse. And it gets more and more terrible as it goes on, especially when Ashley reveals her past. The world has constantly victimized this girl and it made me feel awful. Also, the parents cannot look deeper into themselves to realize why she is behaving this way. It was beyond disturbing.

I didn’t really like the ending as I wished it were different but I understand why it went the way it did. I am constantly in awe of the way Jon Athan conveys emotion and anxiety through his books.

I’ve said it a thousand times, but one of the reasons that I love Athan’s books is that they tackle real life horrors. And this one is no different. The cycle of abuse and bad parenting is terrifying, and while this is obviously an extreme version, it also makes you think about how you truly have no idea what’s going on in peoples’ homes and lives.

I went into this book completely blind. If I would have acted like Ashley when I was living with my parents I would have been under lock and key, and had my ass beat. She is so disrespectful towards her parents it's heartbreaking. I say that but Logan could have punished her in a different way. He took it way too far way too quick. Jane should have stepped in. I agree that our kids need to be taught not coddled, but not in the way that Logan and Jane did it. Calvin's behavior was strange with Ashley. Knowing that Ashley told her mom and her mom blamed her broke my heart. This book is worse abuse than "A Child Called It". It is hard to read and is definitely a tear jerker.
