I often struggle to actually enjoy Shakespeare, at least in written form, but this was among the more satisfying ones to read, for me. The various subplots are well structured and aren't too convoluted for me to keep track of. The themes are easy to connect to, as well: ambition corrupting the power-hungry; heroic levels of loyalty even when it may not be deserved; conflict and devotion between generations. It's still Shakespeare, of course. The villains are over-the-top bad; the sympathetic characters are paragons of virtue, and the changes of heart are whiplash-inducing. Plus the language delivers the usual combination of headaches and etymological insights.

So, I read this in class over the whole academic year, which is why I haven't logged it properly until now. I had my exam in it today and I LOVED it. Honestly, such perfect questions.

Anyway, I can't say I've ever been a massive Shakespeare fan, but I am obsessed with 'King Lear'. It's like 'Succession' but set in the 1600s, and it's brilliant. I love all the scheming and the betrayal and manipulation; in many ways, it's a cruel and heartless story, but in others, it's also kind and empathetic and optimistic. I think the characters are phenomenal, the world is great, I just adore it. My favourite Shakespeare play.
