Planning to audition for this in a couple weeks, so I figured it was time to read it. Not my favorite Shakespeare but I do like Goneril and Regan....

After teaching Othello to AP Lit for several years, I've decided to switch to King Lear, which has appeared on the Q3 list more frequently than Othello. Because the students usually enjoy Othello, I was worried about switching. Now that I've finished this one, I feel that it is a stronger text. Iago's lack of remorse in the face of so much death always bothered me.

Update: 2/3/23-- A student who read both tragedies this semester suggested that Othello is works just as well as King Lear and is more enjoyable to read since fewer characters are running around. Will take her thoughts into consideration.

3 stars. Lear is quite the character. This was an intense read but it didn't completely pull me in like some of Shakespeare's other works. I remember this being one that I didn't like in HS so I'm glad that upon my re-read I enjoyed it a lot more.
