Roald Dahl

This is a love story with a Dahl spin on it. So you know that it’s funny but messed up when you think about it. “Nothing good will come from dishonesty,” until it does apparently.

This story also reuses a trick from The Twits, even reuses the same simile describing it.

We started with this book as our first read aloud of the year with my 3rd/4th classroom. The kids really enjoyed it, and so did I. It's a love story, but an unconventional. Mr. Hoppy does something unusual to get his neighbor to fall in love with him. The kids thought it was very funny!

Mr Hoppy is a skilled and ambitious fabricator. I don’t understand why he didn’t put those skills to used build Alfie a sweet tortoise house rather than building a marriage on a lie. While the author doesn’t say as much, I don’t think things end well for Mr and Mrs Hoppy.

Delightful and cynical at the same time. Pure Dahl!

I absolutely loved Roald Dahl as a kid, and have been reading them to my niece. He has a quirky and sometimes outdated way of describing people but a lot of his observations on humanity still ring true. I found the thought of the sneaky tortoise trade out way more concerning that the author or my niece did! The epilogue of Alfie did bring it back up to acceptable morally somehow!
