I read this because of the recent BBC adaptation of the book and the very short length of the book. A number of people complained about the changes to the storyline and after reading it I can understand why the BBC did change it. Poor Alfie, a pet Mrs Silver had supposedly had for a number of years but she couldn't tell when he'd been swapped several times. Poor Mrs Silver who believed that a Tortoises size could be changed by reading words backwards to him. Fooled by a man who she then marries immediately after performing such a miracle and disposing of over 100 tortoises including the 'original' Alfie. Poor Alfie.
The BBC adaptation ensures that Mr Hoppy's deception is discovered by Mrs Silver and the original Alfie is returned.
Quentin Blake's illustrations are wonderful but I'm never comfortable with Mr Dahl's stories.

My childhood favourite book, then when I seen the motion picture, it brought out my love of Jazz music (and old people)
Maaan... This was one of my favs as a kid, I love the way Quentin Blake draws tortoises. The plot is such a shame, I can't believe he literally pranks her into marriage. If someone was swapping Windy out for bigger turtles, I would be able to tell for sure thank you very much.
