This is cute and all, but it is about Mr. Hoppy who totally tricks Ms. Silver. I mean he plays her like a fiddle and poor Alfie can't do anything about it.

Marital implications aside, this was a cute little story about a man who is attempting to woo a lady by helping her grow her tortoise?

It sounds a lot weirder when you say it like that but it’s still a cute little story. And I don’t think that the spell to grow the tortoise is actually going to work, even though I wanted it to work when I read this story for the first time when I was younger.

A quick easy read, if you don’t look too closely at the marriage side of things.

Wow. I definitely have some issues with the main plot of this book. I read it aloud to my 4 year old, never having read it myself. But rather than throw it out the window when I saw where the plot was going, we just had an active discussion about it as we went along. "Do you think it was nice of Mr. Hoppy to take Mrs. Silver's turtle without asking?" etc. ...I guess I'm a little less disturbed by the resolution because apparently Mrs. Silver was just waiting and wishing Mr. Hoppy would propose for some time. Anyway, it's not the best story to share with kids but it can also be a learning opportunity - not every book character is a role model and something can be learned even from the bad ones.

I read this when I was a kid and now that I've read it again it seems so bizarre. Buying loads of turtles to win a lover? Totally normal. I guess it might be funny and entertaining for children though, hence the rating.

One of the classes I’m assisting is reading this book and all I saw were tortoises … so I’m obviously going to read it. It was so close to being 5/5 tortoises, because if he wanted to he would, but I’m taking a star off for the ending.
I know Alfie still ended up in a good home, but poor Mrs. Silver thinking she has the OG Alfie.
