A lovely sweet little story.
It's surprising how few stories there are (especially children's stories) with old people as the protagonist. Mr Hoppy is in love with Ms Silver, but he doesn't have the nerve to tell her. It's a very sweet idea.
He then has some fun and hijinks with her tortoise and trying to make him grow. In the end is a bit of physical humour and a sweet ending. I like how we see what happens to the tortoises at the end, and we get a little warning update about owning and buying tortoises.

Older man is in love with older woman in the apartment below his, but he's shy about talking to her. Older woman adores her pet tortoise, but wishes it would grow bigger. So older man concocts an elaborate scheme to trick older woman into thinking he has a magical tortoise-growth spell.
Hilarity and romance ensue.
Well, some romance, anyway.
This could have used a plot twist or two, and perhaps a bit more care for poor Alfie, the original pet tortoise.

Short, sweet, silly, and a lot of heart! Fun to read a story of his that I had never read before!
Do not read this book to your kids! Mr. Hoppy is a terrible person.
The writing style and the illustrations were cute, but the overall story line was creepy. Mr. Hoppy manipulates his love interest, but there’s never any fallout of his actions. I can understand that if Mr. Hoppy had been discovered and both characters had grown as people they might end up together, but that’s not what happened at all.
At least the safety and happiness of the original turtle was confirmed at the end of the story.
