Rereading Dahl books for 1. Work & 2. My nan was planning a whole Roald Dahl reread before she passed, so I'm taking it up instead.

I don't think I ever read Esio Trot as a kid, if I did, I have certainly forgotten it. I was beyond disappointed and don't really want to encourage my students to read it. This book tells the story of a man obsessed with the woman who lives downstairs. She has a pet tortoise she wishes would grow bigger, and comments that if he helped her she would be his 'slave for life' - which gets him rather excited. So he buys hundreds of tortoises of varying sizes and keeps swapping them till she eventually realised the tortoise has grown bigger, they kiss and she agrees to marry him. She never gets to know he is a lying, deceiving excuse for a man. And she never gets her actual tortoise back.

WHAT?!? Nope. This is not a cute kids book.

My year of Roald Dahl continues.....

This is a cute story where Mr. Hoppy is in love with Mrs. Silver, but her heart belongs to Alfie, her pet tortoise. Mr. Hoppy tries to win her heart over by helping her tortoise "grow" to the length and height that Mrs. Silver wants. His plan takes one hundred and forty tortoises, an ancient spell, and a little bit of magic.

Dahl is an amazing writer. The synthesis of an archaic romance and a quirky children's book is an unexpected masterpiece. Dahl's unique writing style is engaging and novel.

There is no love story quite like them
