I mean... wow. First, the good stuff: As usual for most Strindberg plays, it has good dialogue and detailed characterizations. Now the bad stuff: everything else. The play is a thin veneered hateful array of paranoid thoughts about women from someone who sees any woman who even tries to show the barest amount of autonomy as "out to destroy men". It's so sexist that even the random racist remark in the middle of the play goes completely unmentioned because the rest of the play is very very VERY sexist!
Strindberg has written some good plays despite his many hang-ups with women and relationships, and trying to act incredibly in line with patriarchal views. "The Father" is not one of the good ones. Sadly though, it feels like it's Strindberg at his most bare, and that's... saddening and sobering.
