i read this in less than a day on the way to the beach and i went to sleep afraid. loved the troop by nick cutter but this combined the dread i crave from horror movies and his expertly crafted body horror writing and descriptors into a book and i was in LOVE. 10/10. i thought nothing was more frightening than my family, you gave me perspective, thank you (:

amended review: changed it to a 4 because on my reread I felt like the ending was less satisfying than I remembered but its still SO damn good love u mr craig thanks for the mental anguish

Okay so there a lot of complicated feelings bottled up in this one.
Generally speaking it succeeded in its purpose and terrified me. But this leads right to my first complain: I expected monster-horror not gross-body-mutilation-horror. If I had known that I would've never picked this up, cause I can't stand body horror.
So obviously I didn't like that aspect, but it also obviously terrified me. In addition to that the atmosphere was good.
There were other things I really didn't like:
~the insane amount of animal death/torture/experimentation/mutilation... Just no
~all the flashbacks to Luke's childhood and how it was handled. First some of the descriptions really rubbed me the wrong way and could've easily been left out, and second sometimes implying is enough! One scene really wasn't necessary because as a reader you already knew the person was doing bad stuff and because it was never clearly said (before that scene) your imagination got the better of you.
~the ending. Like first there's pages upon pages of exposition and details and then there suddenly just is vagueness. What happened? You wouldn't know because there aren't any details suddenly

I didn't like this, it made me incredible uncomfortable and creeped me out but that's the purpose of the book. Even though I disliked many aspects I've got to give credit where credit is due (looking at you god awful bee scene*shudders*)

A man goes to save his brother from a mysterious underwater scientific station. The main character is very annoying and the book is hard to finish
