Trigger warnings: death, cancer, feuding, injuries
I am so disappointed. I've been interested in this book since it was announced. I love a good retelling and I thought it was so great that it was set in Brazil and based on the author's hometown. However, not a lot of this book worked for me. I wasn't a fan of the writing style, it was kind of all over the place and not the most engaging. While I understood the main character and why her inner monologue was so scattered and flipping back and forth, it made it difficult for me to connect with her and trust her as a narrator. This also made it hard for me to buy into the romance and even into the families' feud. Everything just seemed so blown out of proportion and dramatic for drama's sake, and not because the stakes really made it that way. I did enjoy the way the author explored grief and how hard it is to process personally as well as in a family. I loved all the descriptions of food and the discussions on gentrification. But I need characters to keep me engaged in a story and it didn't work out that way in this story unfortunately.

Cute read. Honestly, probably would've liked it better when I was in middle school and not in my 20s.
