I am not sure how to feel about this collection of poems. As a privileged white woman some of the things mentioned I simply cannot relate to, but that does not in any way make what was written irrelevant. 

I often felt uncomfortable while reading. Hard topics are addressed in reference to race, religion, rape, and more. I’m sure some of it is over my head, but the parts that resonated with me were beautiful and I hope more people read this book. 

Just know it’s not fluffy and sweet, it’s deep and hard and shines a light on those uncomfortable (and often not talked about) corners of society.

This is not a book that I think can be read in one sitting. I had to pause and come back so many times. Not just out of sadness or anger but because a phrase, a line, a stanza, a poem hit me in a deep place and I needed a moment or several really. I adore this work.
