This was really LONG, but da Vinci's life is jam-packed with so much amazingness, I think it probably merits the full 600 pages! I did listen to it on audiobook and there were a few times when I thought I likely wouldn't have continued to read it if I were using a hard copy. That being said, I'm so glad I finished it. He was truly a genius - self-made and generated purely by his curiosity. He is such an inspiration to observe and wonder and learn about the world around us.

I did find a PDF with the images of his works and notebooks so I could look at those while I listened to the commentary - that was when I was especially glad to be listening so I didn't have to read and flip to look and read more, I just listened on slow speed so I could really take everything in visually while I was listening.

Though it wasn't always a thrilling book, I feel absolutely enriched for having explored Leonardo da Vinci's life and work!

Absolutely phenomenal!

Leonardo just rose waaay to the top of my favourite artists just because of this book. Even though I'd seen his paintings live many times and knew many of the stories behind them, Isaacson puts it all into a deeply insightful and compelling context. I was desperate to keep reading this book and find out more and more!

This is how non-academic biographies should be done. Enough detail to learn about the person without going overboard.  A non-academic doesn't need a 100 pages on someone's grandfather. Fascinating story about DaVinci along with a lot of good artwork.

More of a textbook. I had a really hard time getting through this book.

It could be a lot shorter and still carry the same message. Some parts are very repetitive. Such as: the analogy between earth and human body, the use of sfumato technique as an analogy, his inability to finish paintings etc. There are some sections of this book I didn't understand why there were there. Is it really important to mention the conflict about if a painting does belong to Leonardo or not? I'm pretty sure I won't remember anything about that a month later.

There were great parts too, I learned a lot about him, but does it justify the total reading time I'm not sure. I also liked that author had no problem with Leonardo's homosexuality thus he didn't need to censor it.

Insightful, detailed without being overwhelming, q fascinating look at a truly fascinating person. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.
