War and Peace Vol. II

This was a mission! So many characters to keep track of, but I enjoyed seeing their transformations throughout the passage of time. The switching between war and peace keeps it moving, def feels good to check this one off the list!

Wasn’t bad. Don’t think I can find a reason to recommend this book to anyone either. Filled with commentary about what it’s like to have the emotions and feelings of a human. At time he posed and discussed questions interesting philosophical questions but not as often as I would have liked. Annoying how he goes on rants about how Napoleon is an idiot that occasionally got lucky. There are redeeming factors that make me not HATE the book- I like the way things are described but over all the lack of plot and motivation for the characters makes it too bland to be a favorite. Overall meh. Not worth the time for 99% of people.

I do not feel like I can give this book 4 stars, because a 4 star review for me is a book that I can recommend to most people. I greatly enjoyed parts of this book, but it did take me far to long to finish. I love character driven books and this very much fits into that category. Following these characters grow and change was wonderful. I started watching the BBC mini series a few days after I finished and had so much fun seeing them in a screen but also younger than where I left them.
This book us full of character, history, and philosophy. It isn't a simple book, I could just pick up and put down as I pleased. I felt like I had to be in the right mindset to start the next chapter.
I feel like to re-read this book in a few years, just to see how my own viewpoints have changed.

Everyone cried so much and it made me feel so seen!!!

Favorite characters: Marya, Pierre, Natasha but from everyone else’s perspective, Andrei after he has a glow up

Too much repetition with the philosophy of war and history stuff

Don’t read the epilogue it’s such a slog
slow-paced

Beautiful writing. Love the amount of jumping scenes and characters. Some are very thought provoking and philosophical. Creates interesting commentary on how to live. Some of the war details are a little boring because its trying very hard to be specific and accurate.

Tolstoy was really feeling himself on the 2nd epilogue lol. I respect a man who uses so many analogies to argue his point. If Tolstoy is to be believed, I didn’t really have a choice whether I should read this or not so I’m glad I enjoyed the process so much.
